December 26, 2022
Otsuka Medical Devices Co., Ltd. ("Otsuka Medical Devices") announces that it has entered into an exclusive distribution agreement with Cardiovascular Systems, Inc. ("CSI") as of December 13, 2022, for Japan.
Otsuka Medical Devices will begin distributing CSI's atherectomy device, the Diamondback 360® Coronary Orbital Atherectomy System ("OAS") in Japan on February 1, 2023. In the initial stages, Otsuka Medical Devices will work with the current distributor of OAS, Medikit Co., Ltd., and consign order operations to them to ensure a smooth transition and to provide a stable supply of the device to all customers. During this period, Otsuka Medical Devices will ensure that customers are provided with optimum support through the expertise of Medikit Co., Ltd.
Atherectomy is a technique for treating stenotic lesions that have narrowed due to arteriosclerosis or other factors. The procedure removes the lesions with specialized equipment, such as the OAS. OAS's unique mechanism of action uses a patented combination of centrifugal force and differential sanding to safely and simply remove severely calcified material from coronary lesions with a diamond-coated crown, enabling successful luminal patency restoration.
There are estimated to be approximately 260,000 PCI (Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) cases every year, of which around 10% are thought to be treated using atherectomy devices. The number of cases is expected to grow in the future.
